About Claire Cruz — AI Decoded News

“`html

I’m Claire Cruz — a former middle school science teacher who now explains AI news to people who don’t have a computer science degree and shouldn’t need one.

Background

I taught middle school science in Phoenix for nine years. Every day I stood in front of twelve-year-olds who had no reason to care about what I was explaining, and I had to make them care — by starting with something they already understood and building from there. That’s not a skill you learn from a textbook. You develop it by failing in front of a room full of kids until you figure out what actually works.

I moved into ed-tech content in 2020, and AI pulled me in not because I went looking for it, but because my former teacher colleagues kept texting me with questions. “Is ChatGPT going to replace teachers?” “What does this Google announcement actually mean?” “Should I be worried?” I wasn’t a technologist — I still don’t describe myself that way — but I could read the research, understand the story, and then explain it in a way that didn’t make people feel lost. That’s a specific thing, and I realized not many people were doing it for a general audience.

So I started AI Decoded News. The same instinct that drove how I planned a lesson — what does this actually mean for the person in front of me, and what do they need to know first? — drives how I approach every piece I write here. I never left teaching. I just changed classrooms.

What I Cover on AI Decoded News

Every news post on this site explains both the story and what it actually means for someone who isn’t working in tech. When a company makes a major AI announcement, I link to the original source, explain what they’re claiming, and then compare that against what independent researchers are saying. I track follow-up — what happened after the announcement? Did it matter? I also flag when I’m simplifying something for clarity, because I’d rather be honest about complexity than pretend something is clean when it isn’t. I don’t write for other tech journalists. I write for my former colleagues.

What I won’t do: use an acronym like LLM (large language model) without spelling it out first, assume you already know what “inference” or “parameters” mean, or tell you something “changes everything” when I’ve seen too many of those moments quietly fizzle out. If the hype is outpacing the reality, I’ll say so. And every explainer on this site builds from zero — no assumed knowledge, no prerequisites, no moment where you’re supposed to already know something I haven’t explained.
